Dental cleanings involve removing plaque (soft, sticky, bacteria-infested film) and tartar (calculus) deposits that have built up on the teeth over time.
Your teeth are continually exposed to saliva, which contains calcium and other substances which help strengthen and protect the teeth. While this is a good thing, it also means that we tend to get a build-up of calcium deposits on our teeth. This chalky substance will eventually build up over time, like limescale in a pipe. Usually, it is the same colour as your teeth and can easily be mistaken as part of your teeth, but it also can cause brown or black staining based on what foods and drinks you are consuming.
If the calculus, or tartar as we call it, is allowed to accumulate, it will provide the right conditions for bacteria to thrive next to the gums. The purpose of cleaning and polishing is to leave the surface of your teeth clean and smooth so that bacteria cannot stick to them. This also means you have a better chance of keeping your teeth clean with your regular home care.
